As we seem to be having some gorgeous sunny weather at the moment my wedding piece of the week just has to be ‘Summertime’ by George Gershwin. He wrote the song in 1935 for the opera Porgy and Bess and it soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard. It is described as “without doubt … one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote … Gershwin’s highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of negroes in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century.”
The Lochrian Ensemble has a lovely string quartet arrangement of this beautiful tune – perfect for playing at a summer wedding.
In the meantime here is the legendary Ella Fitzgerald performing the song. Sit back and enjoy!
